DIY Fabric Garland Step by Step Tutorial
When we plan decor for an event, ideally we want something that will create a wow impression as soon as guests come in. And if we are particular about the theme then the choice of decor obviously needs to reflect that.
Fabric generally gives a warm and homely touch to any decor or surface. Handmade fabric buntings, garlands and backdrops are perfect additions for this very purpose. They will also emphasise the shabby, cottage and vintage themes of any event. They don’t take long, are inexpensive, and not difficult to make at all.
So let’s get going!

All you need is: pieces of fabric that complement your event theme, colours and style; jute twine or other string; and a pair of scissors.
Method…
Make the strips. Take a piece of fabric, make a small slit on any one edge of the fabric with a pair of scissors, then with both hands, tear the fabric down all the way until the strip detaches itself from the fabric. Ripping the fabric instead of cutting it and making them in varying lengths/widths will enhance the roughness, shabby and vintage feel.
Cut the twine. Measure the length of the bunting that you will need. Will you be decorating a back wall, or framing a table? Or will you be using it as bunting? Don’t worry if it’s not exact, you will easily be able to add length afterwards in case it’s not enough.
Knot all the fabric strips to the twine. Taking each strip, knot them to the twine one by one. Put them in random sequence of pattern, colour, length, width, thickness, etc. to give an extra rustic, shabby and vintage charm. Once all of them have been tied, your shabby chic bunting is ready to hang! 🙂
