Somewhere between the first yawn of the trees and the second sip of my tea
This morning, the world was soft with dew, and the sky wore that watercolour hush only spring knows how to paint. I was halfway through wondering if I should put socks on when I heard it—the cheery, flute-like song of someone far more alert than I.
And there he was.
Perched on the garden fence like a note sprung to life from an old music box: a robin. His chest puffed, not from pride, but from purpose. That signature russet red glowed in the early sun, as if he’d caught a bit of the morning and tucked it beneath his wings for safekeeping.

🐦 The Robin’s Quiet Magic
It’s a common bird, some might say. Ordinary.
But there’s a quiet magic to robins if you sit still long enough.
I watched him hop—no, bob—across the damp lawn, that curious head tilt he does, like he’s in on a secret. (Fun fact: that charming lean is how he listens for worms stirring beneath the soil. A tiny hunter in a feathered frock coat.)

He stopped near the rosemary bush, gave the world a thoughtful chirp, and puffed up again. Not out of bravado, mind you, but as if to say:
“I am here, this is morning, and life is unfolding perfectly.”

🪶 Robins: The Poets of the Backyard
Robins are the poets of the bird world.
They arrive not just as messengers of spring, but as keepers of calm.
Unlike the frenetic sparrow or the bossy blue jay, the robin seems to hum through his days, scribbling invisible verses in the air.
And their nests! Oh, their nests—
Meticulously woven cradles, sometimes with a bit of string or yarn if you’ve been messy in the garden. I once found one nestled in the crook of our shed’s gutter, snug as a secret, robin eggs tucked inside.
🧡 What the Robin Teaches
I think we can learn a thing or two from the robin:
- 🌅 Rise early, sing before speaking
- 👂 Tilt your head and really listen
- 🏡 Know where your home is, and build it with care

By the time my tea had gone cold and the sun had chased the dew into memory, he was gone. Off to serenade the next patch of earth, no doubt.
But he left behind a little robin-shaped warmth behind—a reminder that beauty doesn’t need a grand entrance. Sometimes, it just needs wings and a melody.
